Need for Speed II must surely be a treat. And with the promise of a faster engine in 3-D, with 50 percent of the course in more detail, system customization and performance, and a number of other new options, which should really be great. So, ground textures begin to sync at higher speeds, taking the sense of speed on long stretches of road. It is perhaps this detail more than 50 percent comes at a cost of performance, or perhaps the cost is the result of development for Windows 95 only.
Although each local track can be guessed by its name - Pacific Spirit, Mediteraneo, Outback - and they are certainly the places you want to drive one of these dream machines, they do not look like any road on my planet. Of course, you get the twists, turns, peaks and valleys as you might expect, and of course there are ornaments to make them more interesting. But what was really nice was the original balance between the surreal and real roads. Most roads in NFS II are so outrageous that they seem to belong to Monster Truck Madness, not a car simulation game with a relatively short and stiff suspensions that do not meet so well on the pavement and jumps.
Even the cars this time out on the fringes of familiarity. Unless you have been to a car show recently, you've probably never seen any of these machines. Of course, they are fun to drive, but none of them are what most of us consider at hand, which interferes with what the original NFS did so well - give a sense of immersion and the suspension of disbelief. Some may be disappointed that the cop (and the radar detector) was removed completely, and all tracks are circuits - there is no more linear routes with checkpoints. These are the features that made the original game more realistic - and unique.
There are two racing modes to choose from, Arcade and Simulation. Arcade mode improves handling considerably, but the simulation does not give the sense of realism. Handling any of the cars in simulation mode can be a harried affair, because the controls are jerky when steering and breaking. What makes the push to the side of the spectrum is simply the variety of different performance cars and their engines (and horn) sounds. Without a true to life the physical model, however, it is very arcade.
Minimum system requirements:
