As anyone who has toyed with a Saturn Virtua Cop 2 Stunner or in an arcade will tell you, the game is a fairly simple matter. Point of the thing, shoot anyone who wears a mask and does not say "Help me!" Reload the and wash, rinse, repeat. Burrow your way through three levels, each with a separate path and a quick fourth owner, and presto, you're done. It was a great experience at the time, and even as a port of the Saturn, it provided an excellent excuse to get out the Stunner. According to the port of the controller you used, you play as Smarty, Rage, or Janet, three characters seen briefly in the shortest of scenes. Janet, as you may recall, also appeared in Megamix. At the time, Virtua Cop 2 was a revelation. Enemies responded to specific body parts that were affected, and your skilled shooters could score points with shots high court to carefully blow the enemy. VC2 is often credited with the implementation of techniques in their SWAT authentic routines on rails, offering players a decent look at how real the police would approach the scene of a crime.
Now that the Dreamcast version is here, we have the ultimate example of Sega light prowess so far? To be precise absolutely not. Despite the DC with greater processing power of three 2s model in place, the Dreamcast version of Virtua Cop 2 comes at a quality level somewhere between the arcade version and the version of Saturn. The graphics are better than the Saturn version, but inexplicably, the transparent part, they are inferior to the arcade version, despite the addition of illogical "improvements". Imagine every goon being struck by lightning every time you score one, and you'll get the idea. The game allows you to activate automatic recharging, making the game easier than ever, since you can just plug away, with none of this "pull off the screen" stuff reloading. In addition, the graphics suffer from repetitive low-resolution textures, blocks, ugly character models, and an army of interminably dull blond male terrorists.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing is to watch the games scroll down to 30 frames per second. Why is incomprehensible, especially since the original arcade version ran at a perfect 60. The only concession to the power of the Dreamcast are half-assed alpha channel shows (read: transparent) and lighting effects nickname. Explosions and glass are no longer displays the dithered moiré Saturn, and even the model version 2, spat, while the bad light. The culprit could be the Windows CE itself. It is not known if it was used by contractual obligation or simply because it would be easy to port the PC version. What is known is that the game was not given the love they need to survive yet another port like this. As it is, Virtua Cop 2 is a game already criminally short, and even at bargain prices Sega sells this game in Japan, it is still almost impossible to recommend a purchase.
The only thing of interest in this game is the number of posters littered Shen Mue creeping around horizons VC2 spartan, but it is almost embarrassing to see such a game well praised in such a lousy, lazy port.
